Abul Baki has been appointed assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson University.
He received both his bachelor of science and master of science in water resources engineering from Bangladesh University in Bangladesh. He received his Ph.D. in water resources engineering from the University of Alberta in Canada.
Baki’s major research interests are in the areas of environmental hydraulics for sustainability. His research interests are multidisciplinary and have a number of cross-cutting themes that include research on ecohydraulics for ecological river connectivity; enhance the resilience and ecological functioning of urban stream systems; interaction of flow with aquatic vegetation, sediment, and ice; turbulence in habitat structure; stream restoration and enhancement; fish entrainment in hydropower operations; and hydrodynamics and pollutant transport in lakes, reservoirs.
Before joining Clarkson, Baki worked as a water resources engineer and scientist with Ecofish Research Ltd. in Vancouver, British Columbia where he worked on a multidisciplinary research project on environmental hydraulics for sustainable water resources infrastructure. He has honed his engineering skills on applied projects focusing on environmental hydraulics, ecohydraulics, stream restoration, river morphology, sediment transport, and water quality.
He is the recipient of several awards, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Industrial (NSERC) R&D Fellowship, the NSERC IPS Scholarship, the Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize in 2018 (American Society of Civil Engineers), and the Donald R. Stanly Award in 2015 (Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, CSCE). He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
