Tom Langen, Chair of the Biology Department, and Professor of Biology and Psychology at Clarkson University, recently traveled to La Serena, Chile to lead a four-day
course on the environmental impact of infrastructure.
Professor Langen’s course focused on the effects of roads, hydroelectric dams, powerline corridors, wind farms, and irrigation canals have on the environment, and on mitigation options to reduce their negative impacts. The 22 attendees were graduate students at two local Chilean universities, environmental assessors, and functionaries of environmental and agricultural governmental ministries.
The Chilean hosts of the course were former students of Professor Langen during his Fulbright Fellowship at the International Institute for Conservation and Wildlife Management at the National University of Costa Rica. The course co-leader was a colleague from the Institute. Professor Langen and his colleagues have presented similar courses on infrastructure and the environment in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama.
