Clarkson University Senior Jonathan R. Bower and Sophomore Jack Garrett have both received a Power and Energy Society Scholarship from the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Bower, an Electrical Engineering major with a Power Engineering Concentration, and Garrett, also an Electrical Engineering major with a Concentration in Power, and Minors in Project Management, Sustainable Energy Systems Engineering, and Math, are two of only 174 award recipients from 95 schools across the U.S. and Canada.
The goal of the Scholarship Plus Initiative is to encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in power and energy engineering. The program facilitates internships in the industry and mentoring, as well as special recognition as a PES Scholar.
Bower has experience as a Protection and Control Engineer Intern at Rochester Gas & Electric + Substation Engineering Intern at O’Connell Electric and is the Founder and Chair of the Power and Energy Society student branch at Clarkson University.
Garrett also received the John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar award for IEEE Region 1, one of only seven recipients across the U.S. and Canada. He has spent time as a Solar Design Engineering Intern at GE Solar, conducting Biometric Software Research at Clarkson, as a Facilities Electrical Engineering Intern at Intel and as both an Electrical Design Engineering and Project Design and Engineering Intern with Tesla.
Garrett, in part, credits the professors he and Bower have learned from while at Clarkson for helping them earn the award.
“While Jon and I are two good students that earned these scholarships, we couldn’t have done it without the great Clarkson faculty like Professors Ortmeyer and Robinson,” Garrett said.
