Clarkson Mechanical Engineering Students Place Second in National Paper Competition

This past weekend, April 4-6, five Clarkson students from the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering traveled with MAE Associate Professor Ken Visser to the University of Maryland to participate in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Student Paper Competition. There were 70 students giving presentations over two days representing Maryland, MIT, Boston University, Penn State, University of Buffalo, Cornell, Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech, WPI, and Carnegie Mellon among others.

Clarkson Aeronautical engineering student Joseph Chiapperi ‘19 placed 2nd in the Undergraduate category. His presentation was entitled “Multilevel Application of CST Geometry in Airfoil Optimization”. Joseph’s faculty advisor is Dr. Pat Piperni in the MAE department.

Also presenting were: Dalton Alexander ‘19, Aeronautical Engineering, “Visualization of Vortex Interactions with a Parallel Wall”; Jonathan Frutschy ‘21, Aeronautical Engineering, “Computational Validation of Ducted Micro-Turbines”; Louisa Ulrich-Verderber ‘20, Engineering & Management, “Evaluating Efficiencies of a Biologically Inspired Occulting Generator”; and Harry Werner ‘19, Mechanical Engineering, “Numerical Investigation of Dynamic Stall on a Dynamically Pitching Airfoil at Re=12,000”.

The students enjoyed their trip and were invited to rub the nose of the school’s famous Terrapin mascot for good luck!
