“We are grateful that through funding initiatives like HECap, Governor Cuomo and our elected officials are working with the State’s higher education community to advance capital improvements that drive economic development through new construction jobs to our region and elevate the quality of education we are able to deliver to students in preparing them for the jobs of the future,” said Anthony G. Collins, President of Clarkson University.

Clarkson’s Educational Resources Center is at the heart of the University’s academic community on its Potsdam campus and serves the entire university community through highly personalized access to support networks for innovation, entrepreneurial ventures, diversity and inclusion, career and personal advising, and library resources to advance scholarship and research.

Within the ERC structure, the University is creating a national model for technological education and sustainable economic development in its new Innovation Hub.  In addition to the personalized support networks, this hub provides collaborative makerspaces and laboratories for students who want to roll up their sleeves to explore, create and achieve what’s next beyond the status quo.  The Innovation Hub serves as the main venue for Clarkson Ignite, the University’s approach to fast-tracking innovation by igniting connections across disciplines, industries and social cultures to create the entrepreneurial mindset, knowledge and intellectual curiosity needed to innovate world-relevant solutions.

“The Innovation Hub at Clarkson University is a transformational project that brings critical innovation resources together in the academic heart of our campus,” said Erin Draper, managing director of Clarkson Ignite. “The HECap funding facilitates the completion of a critical phase of the facility’s renovation, a highly collaborative learning area with the ability to host academic-focused events that will inspire innovation and enhance our programmatic offerings.”

The funding comes from the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program and is awarded by the HECap Board, which provides matching grants to private, not-for-profit colleges and universities for projects that create construction jobs and drive investment in communities across the state. It is a competitive grant program that enables institutions to leverage private donation support to build, renovate and renew facilities. For every $1 of state funds awarded, colleges and universities match with at least $3 of their own funds.
