Gretchen Oliver Appointed Assistant Professor of Education at Clarkson University

Gretchen P. Oliver has been appointed assistant professor of education and assistant director of the Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program at Clarkson University.

She received her Ph.D. in curriculum & instruction and her master of arts in French studies from the University at Albany, and her bachelor of arts in international studies from Niagara University.

Oliver’s research interests focus on the ways in which secondary mathematics and science teachers and English as a new language (ENL) specialists engage English language learners (ELLs) in meaningful learning experiences, while attending to the linguistic demands of these content areas, and how they use culturally responsive teaching practices in the process.

She studies the collaboration between these general education teachers and ENL specialists, and how they use co-teaching to support ELLs in the mainstream classroom. She has also researched the ways English to speakers of other languages (ESOL)-focused leadership practices support ELLs and their teachers.

Oliver has authored a chapter in Teaching science to English language learners: Preparing pre-service and in-service teachers and co-authored chapters in The Handbook of TESOL in K-12, the TESOL Encyclopedia of English Language Teaching, Improving K-12 STEM Education Outcomes through Technological Integration, and A Handbook to Implement Educational Programs, Practices, and Policies for English Language Learners, as well as multiple presentations and reports.

She is a member of Teachers of English as a Second or Other Language and the National Association for Bilingual Education, as well as a member of the executive board and past vice president conference and scheduling chair of New York State Teachers of English as a Second or Other Language.

Oliver previously served as a visiting assistant professor at the University at Albany. She holds her New York State Permanent Teaching Certificate in French for Grades 7-12 with N-6 Extension and has taught French at Sand Creek Middle School, Lisha Kill Middle School and Albany Academy for Girls.

She is also the co-owner Gregory & Oliver Consulting, which is dedicated to professional development, curriculum design, & research related to English language learner student achievement in K-12 schools.
