Invitation to Participate in Biometrics Research Data Collection

Dr. Stephanie Schuckers, Clarkson University, is performing biometric research and are looking for subjects ages newborn-4 years old willing to participate in their research project titled “Biometric Aging” (IRB Approval #15-05).  The research involves the collection of measurements that can be used for identification, including fingerprint, footprint, hand/wrist vein image, voice recording, face image and iris image.  These measurements are called “biometrics”.    The biometric data collected will be used to build a dataset that will be used to test algorithms, to determine usability of different biometrics at various ages, to study how the biometrics change with age, to develop methods of controlling for changes with age and to search for possible methods of detecting age from the data.  The collections are non-invasive and we make every effort to have the process be a fun, interactive and educational for the children.

The data can be collected during an appointment at Clarkson University.  If you wish to participate, please contact us at lholsopp@clarkson.edu and we will respond with instructions on how to schedule an appointment.

We make every effort to ensure privacy and confidentiality.  The parent’s informed consent and child’s assent paperwork will be the only documents with names on them.  These documents will be stored securely in a locked cabinet at Clarkson University.  All electronic data and surveys will be identified only by a randomly generated subject identification number and then be shared with other researchers via the Joint Multi-Modal Biometric Database.  The only link between the data and your child’s name will be the securely stored informed consent document. Note that Foster Children are not able to participate.

If you ever find yourself in an unfortunate event like a missing child situation, your child’s biometric data may assist law enforcement.  As such we will provide you with a copy of the data we collect by CD, thumb drive or e-mail.

As this is a study on how aging affects biometrics, we will be returning approximately every 6 months to collect data again.  No additional informed consent will be necessary, but your child may choose to stop participating at any time.

Upon the completion of each visit your child will receive an age-appropriate gift of approximately $10 in value.  In addition, for your time as the parent or guardian during the collection, you will receive $25 in cash.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at sschucke@clarkson.edu or 315-268-6536
