Clarkson’s Beacon Institute Receives Grant from NYS Department of Environmental Conservation

Clarkson University’s Beacon Institute was one of 23 groups award grants from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) this week. The DEC announced the $957,000 in awards for the projects in the Hudson River Estuary Watershed. The projects will help communities along the Hudson River Estuary design and improve recreational access, enhance education about the river, and advance stewardship of natural resources.

Clarkson’s Beacon Institute was awarded $39,459 to develop new and updated exhibits, curriculum, and programs about the Hudson River Estuary, its watershed, and fish and wildlife for visitors and Beacon schools. The upgrades will allow the facility to serve more visitors and students. The project will use place-based education about the estuary to promote knowledge of the ecosystem, mastery of skills required by New York State Learning Standards, and participation in community science and stewardship activities.

The grants are funded by the State’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and administered by the DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program.
