Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Marcias Martinez has been granted tenure in the department of mechanical and aeronautical engineering in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering. He is an associate professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering.
Dr. Martinez is working on the development of a Holistic Structural Integrity Process, known as HolSIP. This process is physics-based and founded upon the primary idea that all failure mechanisms involved in the degradation of the structure are interconnected and should not be analyzed as merely the sum of individual mechanisms. In reality, many failure mechanisms interact synergistically and are much more complex and challenging to understand, and thus the requirement for a holistic physics-based analysis and design approach to structural integrity problems. The final goal of this holistic approach is to more accurately assess the reliability and structural integrity of mechanical and aerospace structures and whenever possible assist in extending their life. HolSIP requires many inputs to be able to provide the required outputs that structural integrity engineers need in order to assess the remaining useful life of an aerospace structure relative to its original certification. In order to achieve such a goal, HolSIP combines research fields such as: Health Usage Monitoring (HUMS), Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), Adaptive Structures, Machine Learning Algorithms, initial and current structural conditions, Flight Load and Condition Monitoring. As part of his research, Dr. Martinez focuses on advancements in the field of SHM, Load Monitoring, and fatigue of metallic and composites structures.
He received his bachelor, master and Ph.D. in the field of mechanical engineering, all from Carleton University. Before coming to Clarkson, he was an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Prior to that, Martinez was an adjunct professor at Carleton University and worked as an Associate Researcher at the National Research Council Canada. He was also a thermal analyst for CMP Design Inc. of Ottawa, and a process engineer for WorldHeart Inc., also of Ottawa, where he assisted in the design and testing of a left ventricular assist device (artificial heart).
Martinez has written and co-written extensively in his field, publishing articles, conference papers, book chapters, refereed publications and government publications. He has been a keynote speaker and an invited speaker at professional gatherings abroad and in the United States. He also has taken leadership roles in organizing and chairing conferences and serving on panels.
He is a permanent member of the organizing committee for the International Conference of Adaptive Structure and Technologies (ICAST), in addition to serving as Associate Editor to the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures.
