Mercury Accumulation in Vernal Pools of the Adirondack Mountains and Upper St. Lawrence River Valley

Abstract: Over the course of the fall 2020 semester, the Clarkson Adirondack Semester students conducted an integrated research project with the goal of investigating mercury deposition and methylation. This project took place across 31 vernal pools within the Upper St. Lawrence River Valley and the Adirondack Park. Over several weeks of fieldwork, the students collected samples and compiled an archive of data. This data showed that mercury collects in vernal pools and can accumulate in local biota. These results indicate that mercury pollution impacts both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, emphasizing the extent of mercury pollution within the region.
