Dear colleagues, I am pleased to announce that Professor Darryl Scriven has accepted the appointment to the position of Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. Darryl will assume his new role on April 4, 2021. As an accomplished academician and administrator, he will bring to Clarkson his experience, strong vision for building and supporting academic and research programs in the school, and a passionate commitment for the transformational power of Clarkson University’s academic and research programs.
Darryl Scriven is currently the John W. and Anna H. Hanes Distinguished Professor in Humanities at Winston-Salem State University where he serves as Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education (‘The College’). He is also a non-resident scholar at the National Center for Bioethics in Research and Health Care at Tuskegee University where he served as the inaugural associate director of education and the director of the bioethics honors program prior to his appointment as Chair of the Philosophy department at Florida A&M University in 2014. Darryl brings to the role of dean strong and deep experience in leading multi-million dollar science building renovations, advancing strategic planning, fundraising, and in developing and implementing strategies to support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. An experienced and committed advocate for shared governance, Darryl’s experience and his lived commitment to Clarkson values will be true assets to Clarkson.
Darryl is a native of Jacksonville, Florida who attended Florida A&M University on a baseball scholarship. He earned his dual BS degrees in Math and Philosophy and Religion at Florida A&M University prior to earning his MA and PhD in Philosophy from Purdue University.
I want to thank Tom Langen, who has served as interim dean of the school of arts and sciences since December 2019. Tom set aside numerous professional commitments to take on the role of Interim Dean not knowing the role would become increasingly demanding and complex as we moved into the ‘time of COVID’. I am very grateful to him for serving in this role and for his clarity of purpose and dedication to shared governance. Under Tom’s leadership the School’s external advisory committee blossomed providing vision, guidance, and support for the School in new and important ways. Tom’s experience and expertise ensured we stayed on task with development and implementation of workload equity policies and with the strengthening of faculty governance in the School and shared governance across the institution. It has been an extreme honor to get to know Tom better and work more closely with him. Tom has agreed to continue as interim dean until Dr. Scriven’s first day with the School of Arts and Sciences, after which he will return to his role as a faculty member in the biology department. It is difficult to imagine how the School could have navigated this transition period without Tom’s expertise, commitment, and leadership.
