Faculty: Get Support and Grow Impact by Joining a STEM Ed Task Force

Looking for faculty career development, funding, training or outreach opportunities? Join a STEM Ed Task Force. “Our Task Forces bring together diverse voices from the campus community,” said Katie Kavanagh, Director of Clarkson’s Institute for STEM Education, “creating new ideas to help Clarkson faculty to solve problems and meet their goals.”

The Faculty Mentoring & Support Task Force (Alexander Cohen, Chair) provides new and existing faculty with strategies for teaching-focused career development. These can include professional opportunities for instruction, collaborative curriculum development, delivery of content, assessment, and improvement and evolution to excellent teaching and learning. Current programs include Teaching Pairs, Teaching Circles, and CURE – Clarkson’s Unconference Refresh Event. Activities will be aligned with the needs of faculty and the university to ensure the best possible educational experiences for students.

The CU+ Task Force (Asher Pacht, Chair) broadens the scope and visibility of the Institute for STEM Ed both at Clarkson and beyond. Within the Clarkson community, this task force will identify and develop approaches for interdisciplinary and inter-unit collaboration to maximize impact and benefit of Institute programs. Looking outward, the group will identify opportunities to fund growth of new and existing STEM Ed initiatives. This group with organize regular on-campus mixers and information sessions, including each Fall with new faculty. Our motto: “CU CMe Cit 2gether!” 

The TEU (Teaching Experiences for Undergraduates) Task Force (Mike Ramsdell, Chair) designs, implements, and facilitates programs that develop undergraduate students as educators. Supporting a cadre of undergraduate teaching assistants and P-12 outreach associates, the group will maintain and promote a range of opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in teaching. TEU task force will collaborate and coordinate with other offices on campus that support students as teachers while assisting faculty who want to incorporate outreach programs into their grant proposals.

The JEDI (Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) Training Task Force (Seema Rivera, Chair) is a brand new initiative that will work with other campus entities to amplify the value and reach of open education in STEM. JEDI will align our resources and practices with the principles of anti-racism, equity, social justice, and inclusion. A particular focus of this task force will be to incorporate open education as an approach and mindset to transform teaching and learning to center the needs of underrepresented and marginalized learners and instructors who have been systematically excluded from the benefits of traditional educational systems.
