Each year, Clarkson Construction Engineering Management (CEM) program Corporate Sponsor Kiewit Construction offers women in construction programs across the nation the opportunity to travel, all-expense paid, to Omaha, Nebraska to spend several days learning about leadership in construction and connecting with women mentors in the construction industry. Kiewit’s highly selective program, the Kiewit Women in Construction and Engineering Leadership Seminar, is among the best ways for young emerging women construction professionals to learn what the benefits of a career in construction entails.

This year, out of the 84 women selected to participate, five Clarkson students are heading to Omaha in October for the first in-person seminar since the outbreak of COVID-19. Brittany Condon (CivE ‘22), Sarah Weeks (CivE ‘22), Christina Williams (E&M, ’22), Hannah Williams (CivE ‘23), and Laura Wing (CivE ‘23) are excited about the opportunity to learn from the women leaders in one of the top construction firms in the world. “I am really excited to meet other women studying construction engineering from around the US,” says Sarah. “And I am really looking forward to meeting and learning from women leaders at Kiewit.” Rachel Miles, of Kiewit University Relations and Recruiting, indicated that “We are excited about all the Clarkson ladies attending the event.” Says Erik Gundel (CivE ‘89), Kiewit Project Sponsor, “Clarkson is one of our top schools that we recruit from. Clarkson’s Top 3 Nationally Ranked Construction Engineering Management (CEM) program is one of several exciting programs within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and across the entire University. The sub-discipline of CEM focuses on the execution and management of engineering and architectural design projects. Clarkson’s CEM program offers, in addition to various professional development opportunities, a professional concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, supporting a track in Clarkson’s inter-disciplinary BS in Engineering & Management, a Minor in Architectural & Facilities Engineering, a graduate-level CEM Advanced Certificate, and both a Master of Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Master of Science in Engineering Management with a concentration in CEM. The program’s graduates are leaders on projects as complex as the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in the 1980s, to some of the tallest buildings in the world and largest highway projects today. Supported by an advisory board of corporate, foundation and individual supporters, the program was the first in NYS to offer a dedicated BIM/IPD course at the undergraduate level and the first-ever graduate-level Lean Construction course nationally. In order to stay ahead of the curve, the CEM Program provides co-curricular and extra-curricular experiences through community projects as part of the Clarkson CEM Consulting Group, and boasting a 100% year-over-year placement rate of its graduates in the construction industry.
