Electrical & Computer Engineering Seminar, Wednesday, February 9th

Edward Verenich, Research Scientist, Air Force Research Laboratory PhD candidate, Computer Science at Clarkson University

Will present a talk entitled:

In support of the expert: ML in the pulmonary radiology domain

Abstract: Operational Machine Learning, or use of ML in real world applications, presents various challenges in domain specific applications. State of the art ML approaches that are reported in peer reviewed academic literature are often the product of well curated data environments and assumptions. In operational environments, data is often noisy and data curation is prohibitively expensive. In this talk, we describe challenges and possible approaches to successfully deploying ML solutions in the pulmonary radiology domain, specifically dealing with trust and speed of development of such solutions when dealing with novel situations.

Bio: Edward Verenich is a research scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome,
NY. He holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Utica College, an M. Eng. in Computer Science from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Clarkson University. His research interests concern the effective deployment of AI/ML techniques in support of subject matter experts. He conducts research in the areas of explainable AI, with emphasis on Deep Learning in Computer Vision, as well as predictive modeling using probabilistic causal reasoning.
