The Evaluation of Materials’ Infectivity (Antibacterial, Antiviral, and Antibiofilm Characteristics of Materials) and Its Application to Industrial Problems

ABSTRACT: Materials’ infectivity (ability to spread infection) plays an important role for controlling infection through materials and helps solve industrial problems.  Infection / disease can spread from person to person and from materials to people, etc. When individuals talk, sneeze, and cough, they release droplets that may contain viruses and bacteria (which are able to produce biofilms that provide a protective casing for them). Small droplets remain in the air for quite a while and larger ones might land on various materials which could spread diseases when touched by humans. Infections cause medical problems as a result of having bacteria on biomaterials like those used for hip replacements. Biofilms cause corrosion as well as clogging and scale buildup in industrial pipes, etc. To control problems such as these, materials need to be evaluated in terms of their infectivity. Also, antibacterial, antiviral, and antibiofilm counter measurers (like special coatings) need to be developed and used.

Bio for Prof. Kanematsu:  Professor Kanematsu, a Fellow of the ASM and a Fellow of IMF, is a Professor Emeritus at the National Institute of Technology at Suzuka College and a Visiting Professor for Nagoya University. He holds a M. Eng. degree and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Nagoya University in Japan. He has been an active researcher in the areas of Surface Science and Engineering Materials for many years and has over 500 academic publications. He has numerous honors to his name including Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology Award (which is considered the number one prize from the Minister of Education in the Japanese government).
