Clarkson University Ph.D. Students Present at American Welding Society Annual Show

A pair of Clarkson University Ph.D. students who study with Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Professor Daryush Aidun gave three presentations at the American Welding Society Annual Show during the FABTECH 2018 Conference which was held Nov. 6 through 8 in Atlanta, GA.

Graduate students Farrokh Binesh and Fatemeh Herjripour and Professor Daryush Aidun

Fatemeh Hejripour presented two talks titled: “Mass Transport in Deposited Cold Wire Arc Cladding” and “Modelling of Mixing and Unmixed Zones in 410 Stainless Steel/Inco 718 Dissimilar Metal Welds,” and Farrokh Binesh presented a talk titled: “Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of WAAM Duplex Stainless Steel Tube.”

Hejripour’s research involves computational and experimental assessment of joining dissimilar alloys using welding and cladding. As part of her Ph.D. thesis, she studies the mass transport phenomenon and its effect on mechanical properties in the dissimilar metals welding and cladding processes. She also focuses on the thermal simulation of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) process to predict the microstructure of WAAM parts.

Binesh works on the minimization of Residual Stresses formation in the Wire Arc Additive Manufactured structures made of Duplex Stainless Steels. The mechanical and metallurgical performance of the WAAM-made structures are highly dependent on the nonuniform thermal cycles inflicted during the WAAM process, which must be accounted while manipulating the process parameters to reach the minimal residual stresses formation. Preservation of the 50/50 phase balance of the stainless-steel material through the WAAM process is a major challenge of Farrokh’s Ph.D. thesis.
