Cecilia Martinez Receives Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor at Clarkson University

Clarkson University President Tony Collins has announced that Cecilia Martinez has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of engineering & management in the David D. Reh School of Business.

Martinez studied industrial and systems engineering at Monterrey Tech in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Then, she discovered her passion for solving problems and helping people do their jobs more easily and effectively, and ultimately help save money to companies. She is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black belt and has worked for the automobile and electronics industries and has served as a process improvement consultant across the different functions of businesses from the manufacturing and service sectors.

Her research is in the area of systems and engineering management, and focuses primarily on applying quantitative (e.g., stochastic) modeling techniques to solve managerial problems. She explores ways to design and manage performance improvement initiatives for product development, manufacturing, and service environments.

Other areas of interests involve operation research and operations management, performance measurement, and lean process design. In addition, Martinez has also conducted research on quality improvement and knowledge transfer within Lean Six Sigma projects.

Her research was further recognized in 2011 through the Best Paper Award in Engineering Management by the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) and two other student paper competitions by IIE in 2010, and by the American Society for Engineering Management in 2009. Her recent awards include the ELSS 2018 first runner up of the Best Paper Competition, the 2018 Engineering Lean & Six Sigma Conference Sir Geoffrey Vickers Memorial Award for outstanding paper, and the 2018 International Society for Systems of Science.

Martinez has written and co-written articles for scholarly journals and refereed conference publications. She also serves as an associate editor for the Engineering Management Journal, and reviewer for the Journal for Enterprise Transformation, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and Journal of Cleaner Production, among others. She is an active member of the Systems and Engineering Management Society.

Martinez received her B.S. in industrial engineering and her M.Sc. in manufacturing systems, from Monterrey Tech, Mexico. She holds two doctoral degrees: one in engineering sciences from Monterrey Tech, and another in systems and engineering management from Texas Tech University at Lubbock.

Before coming to Clarkson, Martinez was an engineering management consultant at Monterrey Tech, where she worked with local and national industry partners. Prior to that, she worked full-time in industry at Honeywell Automotive in Monterrey, Siemens VDO Automotive in Guadalajara, and Cummins Inc., in Columbus, Ind., all in quality engineering positions that involved the identification, execution, and coaching of Lean Six Sigma projects across business divisions.
