Clarkson University Students Participate in Read Across America at Lawrence Ave. Elementary School

Several students and friends of Clarkson University’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) spent time on Friday reading to students at Lawrence Avenue Elementary School as part of Read Across America.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 1, the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.

HEOP has been taking part in the tradition since 2011 at Lawrence Avenue Elementary. This year, Karla Norales ’22, Dadiri Haji ’22, Hannah Brown ’22, and students/members of the Clarkson community, Mouhamadou Dieng ’22, Alex Figueroa-Rosa ’21, Pen Cheng Patrick Liu, Qi Sun, Youting Peng, and Daidai Lijun, carried on the tradition.

HEOP donated more than 100 copies of Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes to the elementary school for this event.

The pupils of Lawrence Avenue Elementary were not the only students who enjoyed themselves on Friday.

“After having a long and stressful week, reading to the kindergartens reminded me of when I was a kid. It was a nice distraction and definitely the highlight of my week.” Karla Norales.

“This week was rough, so going to the school to see the kindergartener’s faces light up as we read to them really meant a lot to me. It was a great feeling to be there with everyone.” added Dadiri.

Clarkson University’s Arthur O. Eve. HEOP Program (HEOP) is a comprehensive academic support program, jointly sponsored with the New York State Department of Education, to provide New York State residents access to education at private colleges and universities in New York.  HEOP was established in New York State in 1969 and has been at Clarkson since 1994.
