Lauren D. Petley has been appointed assistant professor of psychology at Clarkson University.
She is a patent-holding cognitive neuroscientist whose professional experiences prior to Clarkson were primarily in applied settings, including Canada’s National Research Council, the Biomedical Translational Imaging Center in Halifax, Nova Scotia (with cross-appointments at Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Center), and Starkey Hearing Technologies. She has also served as a research associate at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Petley’s research expertise lies at the intersection of hearing, attention, and mediating factors like task difficulty and cognitive skill. The majority of her research uses electroencephalography (EEG) to measure the neurophysiological correlates of these attentional processes, but past and future research directions include collaborations using other imaging modalities like magnetoencephalography (MEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The goals of her research are not only to improve understanding of auditory processing and selective attention, but also to gain insight into clinical conditions where these capacities may be compromised, and to develop objective diagnostic tools for application in these and other populations.
She is a co-inventor of the patent “Cognitive function assessment in a patient” and her research has been funded by Dalhousie University, Mitacs and the IWK Health Centre.
Petley has published in Biological Psychology, Brain Injury, American Journal of Audiology, Journal of Neuroscience Methods, International Brain Injury Association, International NeuroTrauma Letter 37, Brain Informatics, and Clinical Neurophysiology, among others. She has also given numerous invited and industry talks, as well as conference presentations.
She received her Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Ottawa and her bachelor of science degree in behavioral neuroscience from Laurentian University.
