Blair Stein has been appointed assistant professor of history at Clarkson University.
She received both her Ph.D. and master of arts degrees in history of science, technology and medicine from the University of Oklahoma, her master of arts in history from Queen’s University, and her bachelor of journalism from Carleton University.
Stein is a historian of science and technology, with a particular interest in the intersections between environments, technologies, and identities. She is currently writing a book about how civilian aviation played a role in the establishment, maintenance, and disruption of a modern “envirotechnical” national imaginary in Canada. She also works on the history of the climatic and geographic sciences, science and empire, and technology and modernity.
She has published a chapter in Made Modern: Science and Technology in Canadian History, as well as peer-reviewed articles in Scientia Canadensis, the Journal of Religion and Culture, and the Journal for the History of Astronomy. She has also published and presented in a number of other venues, including public-facing history blogs Technology’s Stories, Activehistory.ca, and The Otter.
Stein is a member of the Canadian Historical Association and the Society for the History of Technology, and sits on the executives of the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association and the Network in Canadian History and the Environment.
