Clarkson University Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Douglas Bohl has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
“Fellowship is a recognition of long term professional achievement. It’s something you receive from a professional society for, over the span of your career, contributing to the profession in ways that are specified by the organization,” said Bohl.
Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Chair Brian Helebrook said Bohl has contributed to the field through his research, education, and leadership.
Bohl’s research expertise is in the area of experimental fluid mechanics. He is one of the few experts in the world on using molecular tagging velocimetry, according to Helenbrook. He is also an expert in the application of particle-induced velocimetry techniques.
“Doug’s biggest strength is his contribution to education. In the classroom, Doug is always innovating,” Helenbrook wrote in a letter on Bohl’s behalf to the ASME Committee of Past Presidents. “Outside of the classroom, Doug leads workshops on teaching pedagogy. He has led these workshops both at Clarkson and at other universities.”
At Clarkson, Bohl is the advisor to the ASME undergraduate student group, a group he has helped rejuvenate. Under his guidance, the ASME undergraduate student group participated in an ASME EFest at Michigan State University. These students are now planning their own EFest to be held at Clarkson.
Bohl also advises the undergraduate Clean Snowmobile Team, which recently came in second place at the SAE clean snowmobile challenge. He has also served the University on the tenure committee and organizes workshops to guide assistant professors with career development. At the National level, Bohl is a member of the ASME multi-phase flow technical committee and is currently organizing the experimental multi-phase flow subtopic for FEDSM’2020. He is also a leader in the community, organizing engineering outreach events such as First Robotics competitions, and serving the community as an EMT.
