Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program to Continue at Clarkson for Five More Years

Clarkson University is proud to continue offering the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP). Recently, the university was awarded CSTEP funding worth a total of nearly $900,000 for 2020-2025. The goal of CSTEP is to increase the number of historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students that are pursuing careers in STEM or licensed professions. Students must be New York State residents. CSTEP Programs provide students with academic enrichment and research experience in science, mathematics and technology content areas. Programs consist of summer and academic year components as well.

CSTEP has been in existence at Clarkson since 1994 and is funded jointly by the University and the New York State Department of Education to support 90 students annually. Marjorie Warden is the Project Director. Some program highlights include: a 10-week faculty-guided summer research program, Community college summer research transfer initiative with Monroe Community College and Onondaga Community College, paid Academic Year research with faculty, alumni engagement and mentoring, and graduate school preparation. Over the course of the last four years, the program has prepared and funded 100 students for undergraduate research opportunities in STEM.

Cathy McNamara, Associate VP for Student Success Center and International Relations says, “CSTEP is a valuable program that fosters academic excellence for our underrepresented students in the STEM fields. Using a holistic approach, an important pillar of our program is to support students so that they can engage in high impact practices which lead to their professional readiness and success.”
