Good Knight – Melanie Waldman ’11 and Shawn Doolen ‘09

As we work through a challenging time – each of us focusing on doing all the right things in the face of uncertainty – your extended Clarkson family is thinking of you.

Each evening, we hope to share a story of good things, Good Knights, as a way to remind each of us that, despite the realities of our challenging days, good things are still happening.  We will look for short stories highlighting members of the Clarkson community demonstrating the values we all share – integrity, teamwork, humility and a commitment to making the world a better place.

Melanie Waldman ’11 and Shawn Doolen ‘09 planned on having a big wedding on April 4, 2020. The invite list included over forty-five Clarkson alumni, including Melanie’s father, Charlie, who is a member of the Class of 1980. Two weeks before the big day, the couple made the decision to cancel the event to protect the health and well-being of friends and family.  After some consideration, they decided that April 4 was still the day and they would find a way to get married. The couple reached out to their photographer who agreed to capture their elopement at Mt. Bierstadt (elev. 14,065 ft) in Georgetown, CO, the spot of their first date. The newlyweds socially distanced themselves as they hiked two miles to the ceremony spot. In Colorado self-solemnize is legal, so they married themselves, signed the license with their photographer as a witness, hiked back down, and called it a very good day!
