Clarkson University Global Supply Chain and Political Science major Joseph Mendoza ‘21 of Staten Island, New York was recently announced as the winner of the Gorbel Inc. Honor Scholarship from the Material Handling Education Foundation (MHEFI).
Gorbel Inc. was founded in 1977 by David D. Reh ‘62, Hon. ‘17, the namesake for the Clarkson University Reh School of Business.
“I believe in our Clarkson community. We are a diverse bunch of global change-makers and I am proud to be a part of it,” Mendoza said. “The fact that this scholarship was sponsored by Mr. Reh’s son makes it even more impactful.”
Coming from Ecuadorian heritage Mendoza says he has always had the belief that “hard work and ambition get you to places you never even knew possible!”
Mendoza is currently doing research in “How nations can better manage supply chains during a crisis?” This research he hopes will aid in helping political systems better support groups like FEMA and Red Cross with tactics to support those in need whether it be a hurricane or a pandemic.
At Clarkson, Mendoza works with the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society for Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) as a chapter officer helping them with professional and leadership development. He recommends the book “7 Habits for Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey since this is the methodology he follows on being an effective leader. Moreover, he is also a HEOP and CUPO student and tutors and mentors students in both programs. Recently, he was awarded a Phalanx award, one of the highest honors you can receive at Clarkson University.
In his free time he enjoys “spending time with his family, working on new business ideas, and learning as much as he can!”
Mendoza’s overall goal is to join the aerospace industry as he has already finished two rotations at GE Aviation working as a preliminary design mechanical engineering co-op and a power systems engineering intern. He is now going to work at Collins Aerospace as a supply chain co-op. He plans after graduation to work in the industry while obtaining his master’s in operations research or systems engineering with goals of using that knowledge to become a supply chain engineer.
David Reh was a Clarkson grad with over a decade of experience selling material handling equipment. Gorbel quickly built a reputation for quality products and excellent customer service. The company grew and expanded to become an international powerhouse with over 400 employees serving the industrial world and the medical rehabilitation world. The current President and CEO is Brian Reh, one of David’s sons. Sadly, David passed away in 2018.
MHEFI has supported material handling and supply chain students at universities for 40 years. MHEFI scholarships are awarded each year to students dedicated to entering the material handling or supply chain field, either within MHI member companies or the user community. For the 2020-2021 academic year, a total of $120,100 in scholarships were issued to students around the country. Since 1976, MHEFI has awarded more than $3 million in scholarships and grants to students at colleges and universities in the United States.
