Undergraduate Student Advising Tips- Fall Restart

This message is intended for all undergraduate Primary and Professional Academic Advisors.

With continuing students’ fall 2020 schedules now released and in recognition of the many changes students will realize with the new standard time blocks, no long weekend breaks, 20 minutes between class periods, the new normal, and more, the information below (as well as information on the OUA website and Moodle page https://www.clarkson.edu/office-university-advising-oua) is intended to offer you support for an intentional, proactive, and successful advising experience amidst the changes.

  1.  Spring 2020 Follow-up to Pass/No Credit Student Options
  2.  Final Grades and Student Academic Standing
  3.  Spring 2020 Advising Evaluation
  4.  Coming soon Advisor’s Fall 2020 Five-week Advising Guide and Advising Syllabus

1.    Spring 2020 Follow-up on Pass/NoCredit

As primary advisor and first point of contact for your students, many students opted for the P/No-Credit option for some or all of their courses during the spring 2020 semester.  For those students who chose the No-Credit option, they may need to update their fall 2020 schedule of courses.  Please review your continuing student schedules for changes or modifications.

Additionally, students may have enrolled and completed summer course work (either at Clarkson or off-campus,) which may affect their fall schedules. For updates to students academic records, please refer to your myCU (PeopleSoft Students) account on a regular basis, as this information changes on a daily basis.   Also, an email to your students requesting updates or information pertaining to course work/schedule, graduation date, professional experience, including co-ops or internships, etc. is extremely helpful!

Reminder: More than ever advisors should be accessible and responsive to students  via distance, zoom, phone, email etc. to insure degree progression, student engagement, and overall student persistence.

2.      Final grades and Academic Standing Reports

Final grades can be found in your myCU – My Advisees – Advising Student Center click on Grades (under other academics).   It is important that you view your students’ grades along with students’ faculty action (good standing, warning, or probation) which can be found on the Unofficial Transcript, which is directly above Advising Student Center.  This will also give you the opportunity to review previous course work, summer school or transfer credits.  The Chair/Associate Dean of your respective departments will also receive this information and may offer support for you to work with students who are experiencing academic difficulty.  Recognize when students might benefit from help or guidance from other supportive units and refer students to such services as appropriate.

3.      Spring 2020 Advising Evaluations

Clarkson recognizes the value of good advising and that comprehensive student academic advising is integral to the quality of student learning, satisfactory student outcomes, and student academic persistence.  As such, an important initiative, students were asked to complete an advisor evaluation using an advisor evaluation tool posted in their myCU.  This is a wonderful opportunity to embrace your strengths as an advisor and to recognize areas for improvement.

The pathway to navigate and access advisors evaluation summaries through faculty self-serve via myCU is:  Main Menu > Self Service > Advisor Center > My Advisor Evaluation Reports
