Chief Inclusion Office Weekly DEIB Resources

These resources are meant to help people explore diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging[DEIB] for themselves, in their communities, and in our institution.  They may be resources that help you re-examine society and do some introspective reflection, explain core concepts like intersectionality or anti-racism, or practical guides for action, such as how to review a syllabus for equity-minded practice.

The resources are linked in the announcement and saved to a common google folder for all to reference, https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1a0DXWcmwl4a5zM5lMsBZR_7uk8_OZhIY?usp=sharing. If you would like to share thoughts on resources, please contact Diversity@Clarkson.edu.  We will also be using some of these resources as the basis for workshops and professional development throughout the year.

This week we offer four resources on talking about elections.  Universities are places of dialog and inquiry.  Elections are a good gut check on how well we do those things as a community.  We offer the following resources to think about how we dialog with each other, within our community and in our pursuit of learning.

Use Clarkson’s voter registration page as a resource.  https://www.clarkson.edu/voter-registration

Super important and simple tips to share with others and think about yourself from Dr Andrea Benjamin, The Clara Luper Department of African & African American Studies the University of Oklahoma, http://www.andreabenjaminphd.com/
Is your voter registration current?
Do you have a plan to vote?
Have you asked five friends about their plans to vote?
Have you looked at your sample ballot?
Have you researched the down ballot races?

Watch this video by Scott Althaus, Merriam Professor of Political Science, Professor of Communication, and Director of the Cline Center for Advanced Social Research at the University of Illinois, on talking politics across differences.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rP4L6-GMW8

We also recommend having some ground rules and respect people’s boundaries when talking about politics and be careful when talking online as virtual in-person and social media exchanges are different than physical face-to-face.
