Polling Interest in Engaging in 2023 World University Games in North Country

The World University Games will be coming to New York’s greater Adirondack North Country Region from January 12-22, 2023.  Clarkson will be the main venue in Potsdam for men’s and women’s ice hockey competition along with our Associated Colleges partners.

With anticipated participation of more than 3,000 athletes from 60+ countries around the world, this international sporting event represents many great opportunities for cultural exchanges with our students as well as engagement with potential graduate study/ exchange programs.  This is the largest winter multi-sport competition after the Winter Olympic Games and was last hosted in the United States of America in Lake Placid in 1972 as a precursor to the infamous 1980 Olympics.  See https://www.lakeplacid2023.com/ for more information.

While the majority of events will be based out of Lake Placid in the historic Olympic Village, there will be a transportation network across the region to take in the games and support a wide fan following.

In addition to hosting hockey, we have been invited to support the region with roles in sustainability, transportation network, winter engineering projects and educational presentations/outreach.  Several initiatives are already underway.

While January 2023 may seem like a ways away, the planning is well underway now.

We have a group that is forming to further coordinate and plan these various roles. We are also looking for some current sophomores who may be interested in ongoing work study/internships to support this effort as well as other students into the future.

If you are interested in getting involved, please start with this short survey expressing areas of interest: https://forms.gle/7QGgNc1hk4N1MgC88 and for other queries, please reach out to me.  Thanks.
