Academic Advisor Guide for Study Abroad

The education abroad preparation and international course selection process can be confusing, and at times frustrating because students have to shuffle between their Study Abroad Coordinator and Academic Advisor. Hopefully, this will help you help them with questions they should be asking and to whom — and when!

Please email us with questions that may arise during any stage of the process.

Planning Stages

  • Encourage students to make appointments with a study abroad coordinator through Handshake .
  • Encourage students to attend the Global Opportunities Fair – 1st Monday of October
  • Discuss with students how study abroad can integrate into and enhance their current curriculum.
  • Help students determine best timing to study abroad and what they need to accomplish while abroad.
  • Share information about where to search for programs

The Application Process

Students may make a request for you to complete a recommendation for their study abroad application.  Once you agree to recommend them, the student will complete that portion of the application. You will receive an email with a link to the Recommender Portal to evaluate the student.  In this recommendation you will evaluate the following:

  • Rank the student on preparedness
  • Motivation for studying abroad
  • Independence and so on
  • There is a text area provided for you to write more about the student
  • You may also attach a letter of recommendation if you wish

 Course Approval Process

The education abroad preparation course selection process can be confusing, at times.

  • Discuss the Off-Campus Coursework Permission Forms – found in myCU
  • Previously taken and approved classes can be found on CU Global Students Homepage Course List Tab  – students still need the OCP forms for each class but this list helps them to know which classes have been approved before.
    • Students will need to be sure the classes are available and offered during the semester they plan to go abroad.
  • Partner Academic Information links found in the description of each program in CU Global.

Helpful information for you to know:

  • Study Abroad credits come back to Clarkson University as Transfer Credits.
  • Students must obtain what is equal to a C or better in order to transfer credits to CU.  We use the following guides to help us determine how grades transfer:
  • Credit systems abroad vary depending on what country the student is studying.

While Abroad

  • Assist with course changes once the students abroad, if needed.
  • Assist students with course registration for the semester they will return to campus.

Returning Home

  • Welcome study abroad students back to campus and help them seek opportunities to integrate their experiences abroad into their curricular activities.
  • Review classes taken abroad and make sure they are still on track academically
  • Advise students about prestigious awards & scholarships to draw on their study abroad experiences.
