Recently, M&T has heard from several Commercial Card clients that cardholders are being asked to enter their PIN more regularly when making purchases at the point of sale. This has been specifically occurring more at gas pumps. While nothing has changed with your M&T Commercial Card, the increase in PIN’s being required may be a function of more merchants converting their gas pumps to accept EMV chip cards.
Please remember the following:
• All M&T Commercial Cards have a unique PIN number that cardholders can customize as they activate their card
• Cardholders may be asked to enter their PIN by the merchant at the point of sale
• Cardholders may reset or change their PIN by calling our M&T Commercial Card customer service phone number at 1-800-443-8671 and selecting Option 5 (Unblock PIN) or Option 6 (Change PIN).
When a Cardholder calls to activate their card or to unblock/change their PIN, they will be asked to authenticate themselves. During that authentication process, cardholders will be asked to enter the Social Security Number and Date of Birth that is tied to their M&T Commercial card on the system.
Note: The values in these fields aren’t the cardholder’s actual SSN. Instead, this value is the cardholder’s University ID number with leading zeros to make a 9 digit number. Callers DO need to know the values that reside in those fields on the system to authenticate themselves before they can complete their activation or other changes.
