Clarkson’s Dr. Dana Barry was an Invited Speaker for Conferences in Japan and Poland

Clarkson’s Dr. Dana Barry, of Canton, was an invited guest speaker at international conferences in Japan and Poland. She presented the talk titled Biofilm Problems in Households and Food Processing Industries at the Interfinish2020 World Congress on September 7, 2021 in Nagoya, Japan. Research Professor Barry described the formation of biofilms (which are a result of bacterial activity) and the problems they cause. She presented general methods to prevent and remove them and mentioned the most common types of bacteria found in bathrooms, kitchens, and food processing plants.

On September 9, 2021, Professor Barry delivered her presentation, Technologies for Teaching during a Pandemic, at the 25th International Conference on Knowledge-Based and Intelligent Information & Engineering Systems held in Szczecin, Poland. She discussed the major impact that the coronavirus has on education and how the initial crisis caused instructors world-wide to quickly adapt and shift to remote teaching. Dr. Barry presented and briefly described the technologies that she and others used to promote active student learning during a pandemic. These technologies (which also enhance in person instruction) include Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Virtual Worlds, Panopto, Perusall, and more. In addition, Dr. Barry, who plays the trumpet in several bands, had an opportunity to use Upbeat software to play and record music with other musicians.

Dr. Dana Barry is a Research Professor in Clarkson University’s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. She is also a professor and president of Ansted University’s Scientific Board, and an officer and Chemistry Ambassador for the American Chemical Society. She has over 300 professional / academic publications, five graduate degrees, and numerous honors. Dr. Barry is especially proud of her Outstanding Achievement Award (2019) from the Materials Research Society of Japan (MRS-J). This award is for outstanding contributions to contamination control on materials’ surfaces and for work with biofilms. Her collaborator Professor Hideyuki Kanematsu of the National Institute of Technology, Suzuka College in Japan, also got the award.
