Moderated by co-director and producer of Mission: JOY and human rights activist Peggy Callahan, the panel includes Dr. Thupten Jinpa Langri (English translator for His holiness the Dalai Lama), Doug Abrams (author, The Book of Joy), and Dr. Elissa Epel (Prof. of Psychiatry at UCSF). The discussion will provide insight into the heartwarming friendship between the Dalai Lama and “Arch” (as he’s known to his friends), the connection between difficult times and happiness, the latest research on the impact of joy, and practical ways to find it. The Mission: JOY event will offer the opportunity to:

  • Learn how bringing joy into our lives improves our physical and mental health – as proven by science
  • Discover the ways joy has impacted the lives and friendship of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu
  • Become empowered to create and share everyday acts of joy to benefit ourselves and each other

Deeply moving and laugh-out-loud funny, Mission: JOY is a documentary with unprecedented access to the unlikely friendship of two international icons who transcend religion: His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In what is likely their last time together, we trace the epic life stories of these Nobel Peace Prize winners as they faced oppression, exile, death threats, cancer, and more — unbowed and still laughing. The film includes cutting edge scientific research that reinforces that, just like for these Holy Men, joy is an inside job, that joy and pain are inseparable, and that deep connection is one of the secrets to joy.
