United Way of Northern New York’s ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) Program has been assisting individuals and families that are employed and working their hardest but are still having a hard time to make ends meet. The ALICE Program is partnered with Renewal House, St Lawrence County CDP, Catholic Charities as well as the following School Districts:

Brasher Falls CSD

Clifton-Fine CSD

Edwards-Knox CSD

Heuvelton CSD

Morristown CSD

Potsdam CSD

Parishville-Hopkinton CSD

Massena CSD

Lisbon CSD

Gouverneur CSD

Norwood-Norfolk CSD

Hermon-Dekalb CSD

Canton CSD

.. and continuing to partner with the rest of the CSD’s.

The goal of ALICE is – see a problem, solve a problem. Let’s stop making people stuffer who are doing everything right and everything they can.
These are real stories about real people in our community the ALICE program was able to help.

  • Eye Glasses There was a younger child whose parents were working their hardest but still can’t afford to buy his eye exam and glasses – United Way of NNY’s ALICE Program put eye glasses on that child so he could focus on learning.
  • Gym Clothes and Everyday Wear for a 10th grader: There was a young lady in 10th grade who outgrew her clothing and even though her mom was employed full time, she was not able to purchase new clothing for this young lady. She was not going to school because of embarrassment and knew she would fail gym class due to not having the appropriate clothing and sneakers. United Way of NNY’s ALICE Program purchased sneakers and the appropriate clothing. Once this young lady received the clothing, she began attending school.
  • Lice and Bed Bug Treatments for Employed Families – United Way of NNY’s ALICE Program has purchased new beds and bedding for children who have had their home treated for Lice and Bed Bugs since the employed parents/guardians spent all of their extra spending money on the treatment. If they didn’t have new beds, the problem wouldn’t have gone away and the children wouldn’t have been able to attend school and other social, healthy activities.
  • Domestic Violence Victim and child – United Way of NNY’s ALICE Program paid for a down payment on a safe home for a longtime domestic violence victim survivor for her and her son to be able to begin their lives safely and healthy. She is beginning her own business as well on this property.
  • Flat Tires and Broken Vehicles: Employed individuals and families cant get to work without a car, especially in this geographically challenged area – United Way of NNY’s ALICE Program is fixing flat tires and broken vehicles to keep individuals employed to be able to support themselves and their families.
