SSH Login Update

The Office of Information Technology is informing University community members who use SSH to connect to Clarkson systems such as Polaris and ACRES of an upcoming update.

Beginning March 23, 2022, community members will be prompted to respond to a Duo multi-factor authentication prompt after entering the password. As with other systems that use Duo to help protect logins, you can choose to receive a push notification to a smart device, use a smart device to generate a numerical code or use a Duo key fob to generate the code.

The following sample scenario is provided to help orient community members of what they can expect to see at login:

[username@polaris ~]$ ssh polaris.clarkson.edu

(username@polaris.clarkson.edu) Password:

(username@polaris.clarkson.edu) Duo two-factor login for username

Enter a passcode or select one of the following options:

Duo Push to XXX-XXX-1234

Passcode or option (1-1): 1

Success. Logging you in…

Last login: Thu Jan 01 00:00:01 1970 from polaris.clarkson.edu

[username@polaris ~]$

Exception: Those using SSH keys to sign into these systems will not need to respond to a Duo prompt.

This update is part of Clarkson’s ongoing efforts to improve information security.
