Message From the Chair
Because of our learning-by-doing approach here in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, our students are well prepared once they graduate to advance their careers in academia, industry or a combination of the two. This newsletter features recent stories of the great work our alums, as well as our faculty, are doing.
— Brian Helenbrook, Professor/Chair of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering/Paynter-Krigman Endowed Professor in Engineering Science Simulation
Valor in Afghanistan
Students in our mechanical and aerospace engineering program go on to do great things. No one exemplifies this more than Matthew McChesney ’14, a captain in the New York Air National Guard. He recently received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his competence, skill and sense of duty during Operation Allies Refuge in 2021.
Welding Superstars
When Professor Daryush Aidun and Fatemeh Hejripour PhD’19 wrote a paper that was published in the Welding Journal, they probably didn’t imagine they would receive an award from the American Welding Society. But that’s exactly what happened with their paper, Effects of Processing Parameters on Wire Arc Additive Manufactured Inconel® 718.
Displaying Climate Solutions
Clarkson professors Ken Visser and Susan Powers ’83, MS’85 are featured in the Climate Solutions exhibit at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, New York. Appropriately, they are highlighted in the section Taking Action on Climate Change, which showcases the actions they and others in the region are implementing in the face of climate change.
Cutting Edge Surgery
While “senioritis” may strike at some universities, it did not affect Monica Bomze ’22. This recent mechanical engineering grad was too busy producing and presenting research during an NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates program. Her focus: a new instrument that can be used for minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery.
