STEM LEAF/ADVANCE January 2023 Newsletter

Welcome to the January edition of the STEM LEAF/ADVANCE Newsletter! Happy 2023!

Clarkson’s NSF ADVANCE grant is designed

1) to effect positive institutional change around reduction of implicit or unintentional bias associated with gender and intersectional issues of race, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, and disability,

2) to systematically and equitably support the development of inclusive leadership skills and the professional advancement of women STEM faculty, and

3) to implement sustainable, systematic changes across the University in support of these goals.

Upcoming Equity-Minded Faculty Workloads Workshop (open to all faculty and/or administration)

On February 28, 2023 from 12-1:30pm ADVANCE is hosting a workshop on Equity-Minded Faculty Workloads based on this paper. The workshop will cover the problem of workload equity, with some interactive exercises, and then describe the process by which units/departments can address workload inequities (principles for reform, developing dashboards, putting in place policies/practices). The workshop will be given by Dawn K. Culpepper (University of Maryland), Joya Misra (UMass Amherst), and KerryAnn O’Meara (University of Maryland).

If you’re interested in holding the time please send an email to streptow@clarkson.edu and Sarah will send you the calendar invitation.

Resources/News

Faculty Gender Imbalances Yield Biased Student Ratings” by R. Quinn in Inside Higher Ed

“A study published this month adds to the many concerns about judging faculty members using student evaluations of their teaching. But this one suggests that gender imbalances in departments exacerbate the issue.”

How Gender Bias Worsened the Peer-Review Crisis” by Sylvia Goodman in The Chronicle of Higher Education

“Mounting evidence suggests the peer-review crisis in academic publishing was worsened, in part, by a system that favors male scholars and discourages women. A new study of nearly 50 journals in the British Medical Journals Publishing Group found that women accounted for less than one in three peer reviewers — scholars who are experts in their field and are critical to vetting new research before it’s published in academic journals. The proportion of female peer reviewers grew by only 2.9 percentage points between 2009 and 2020.”

Upcoming Webinar

Advocates, Allies, or Bystanders: Applying Intersectional Perspectives to Bystander Intervention Trainings in the Academic Workplace.” Research Webinar by Dr. Dawn Culpepper on Feb 23rd at 3pm via Zoom

Dr. Dawn Culpepper, PhD (she/hers) is the Associate Director and an Assistant Research Professor at the University of Maryland’s ADVANCE Program for Inclusive Excellence. Dr. Culpepper’s research broadly examines diversity, equity, and inclusion in the academic workplace. She focuses on policies, practices, and resources that foster equity, disrupt bias, spur organizational effectiveness, and create conditions where women and BIPOC scholars can thrive. (Dr. Culpepper is also facilitating our workshop later this month on faculty workloads!)

Advocates and Allies Workshops

Our Advocates team will have a Clarkson-specific workshop (Men Allies for Gender Equity) ready for faculty soon! All department chairs recently had the opportunity to attend the workshop. Please be on the lookout for dates soon!
