NEW LIFE, NEW CHALLENGES: THE ROLE OF FATHER’S INVOLVEMENT IN
POSTPARTUM MENTAL HEALTH
Abstract:
Becoming a parent is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Did you know that 50% of new mothers experience “baby blues” within two weeks of childbirth, and for some, these negative feelings could develop into postpartum depression – a serious and widespread mental health disorder affecting one in seven mothers?
While extensive studies have been conducted on hormonal changes after childbirth, there is growing research on the familial and social stressors and buffers that contribute to postpartum depression. In this talk, we will dive into the latest research on the relationship between father involvement, couple relationship quality, maternal ethnicity, and postpartum depression symptoms among low-income families. Dr. Zhang will also discuss workplace support and the importance of paternity leave and flexible schedules for both mothers and fathers. By understanding the factors that contribute to postpartum depression, we can better support new mothers and promote their mental health and well-being.
