Welcome to the April edition of the STEM LEAF/ADVANCE Newsletter!

Clarkson’s NSF ADVANCE grant is designed

1) to effect positive institutional change around reduction of implicit or unintentional bias associated with gender and intersectional issues of race, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, and disability,

2) to systematically and equitably support the development of inclusive leadership skills and the professional advancement of women STEM faculty, and

3) to implement sustainable, systematic changes across the University in support of these goals.

Book coming out May 9th:

The Double Bind in Physics Education by Maria Ong

In a detailed exploration of inclusion in physics, social scientist Maria Ong makes the case for far-reaching higher education reform, noting that despite diversity efforts to recruit more women and students of color into science and mathematics programs, many leave the STEM pipeline. The Double Bind in Physics Education takes readers inside the issue by following 10 women of color from their entrance into the undergraduate physics program at a large research university through their pursuit of various educational and career paths. Candid interviews with these women, their instructors and mentors, and their peers, conducted over 25 years, allow Ong to trace how pervasive challenges, such as navigating the intersectionality of race and gender discrimination, have shaped their academic opportunities and career choices.

Why Peer Mentors Are Crucial for Women in STEM by Revecca Coglianese in Inside Higher Ed

Women pursuing STEM fields feel more confident and supported when they make connections to peers. Physics major Rebecca Coglianese shares what has worked for her.

DEI Legislation Tracker in The Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle is tracking legislation that would prohibit colleges from having diversity, equity, and inclusion offices or staff; ban mandatory diversity training; prohibit institutions from using diversity statements in hiring and promotion; or prohibit colleges from using race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in admissions or employment. All four proscriptions were identified in model state legislation proposed this year by the Goldwater and Manhattan Institutes.
