This is an open letter directed to male-identifying faculty, staff and administrators at Clarkson University.

Dear Colleagues,

We are six Clarkson male faculty members who have been meeting together for more than two years as a Clarkson Advocates group. As advocates, we have focused on educating ourselves on the implicit, explicit, and structural biases against women faculty, staff, and administrators in academia generally and particularly at Clarkson University – and putting into action ways to address this to make Clarkson more gender equitable and inclusive.  This is one component of Clarkson University’s STEM LEAF ADVANCE NSF Grant.

We urge you to participate in one of our Allies Gender Equity & Inclusion Workshops. The Allies workshop is a 90-minute activity we have developed that provides an opportunity to reflect on and discuss gender equity and inclusion at Clarkson University. You will see a snapshot of data about our institution. You will learn what research shows about gender equity and inclusion in academia. And most importantly, you will learn some things you can do to make our Clarkson community more equitable and inclusive for women.

Who should do this workshop? In our view, every male-identifying administrator, staff, or faculty member at Clarkson. Why should you attend? It is your responsibility, as it is all of us, to make Clarkson an equitable and inclusive community. Your participation signals your commitment, and the outcome will be knowledge and tools to better meet that responsibility.

The next workshop is on the Potsdam campus (Peterson Board Room) on Wednesday May 10th at 1:00 – 2:30 PM. Please RSVP at advance@clarkson.edu . There will be other opportunities in the fall if you cannot make this workshop. Please make the commitment to participate in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Alan Bowman (Professor, Reh School of Business)

Tom Langen (Professor, Department of Biology)

Christopher Robinson (Professor, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences and Associate Provost)

Phillip White-Cree (Assistant Professor, Department of Humanities & Social Sciences)
