Prevent Student Burnout

Once students reach a state of burnout, they are more likely to exhibit behaviors such as disengagement from social and academic activities, engaging in interpersonal conflicts, and reporting feeling frustrated or unable to cope with their responsibilities. The recommendations below will help you address academic burnout with your students and encourage them to be actively involved in monitoring and managing their emotional wellbeing.

Stay vigilant for the warning signs of stress. If a student is noticeably struggling with classroom performance, privately reach out to that student to address the issue and discuss what can be done to create some degree of improvement. Of course, you need to be prepared for students to not want to openly discuss personal challenges. In those situations, it’s best to keep the discussion focused on acknowledging a concern exists and being supportive of seeing academic performance improve.

Recommend students take advantage of personal management tools. There are self-paced programs and resources available through the WellConnect’s online portal that can help students develop and improve their time management skills, address the sources of stress in their lives, and learn ways to navigate the shifting intensity of their academic experiences.
Remind students that maintaining their balance is an ongoing process. Reaching a careful equilibrium between one’s physical, emotional, academic, professional, and social needs is not something that’s just achieved once or even present every day. Finding a sense of balance comes with understanding that there are days when balance will seem easily maintained and days when it will seem far away.
