School Supply Drive

Seskéha/August 31, 2023

Thank you to those who have already donated; we are looking forward to receiving more school supplies.

Since 1979, the Akwesasne Freedom School was established by Akwesasne parents seeking to have their children attend a community school that is full Kanienʼkéha (Mohawk)  language immersion that emphasizes traditional culture. The school is run by community and parent fundraising and is not beholden to New York State Education funding requirements. Every year students, teachers and parents host events to fundraise and this year the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office will be supporting this effort by asking the Clarkson Community to donate school supplies from September 1st to September 29th to the DEI Lounge in the Student Center.

The following has been requested by the Akwesasne Freedom School:

  • Pencils
  • Sketch Pencils
  • Markers
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Paper for drawing
  • Bristol boards
  • Blank sketchbooks
  • Electric pencil sharpeners
  • Journal books
  • Dry erase markers, fine tip
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Card stock paper
  • Paint – primary colors
  • Paint brushes – various sizes
  • Multiple Canvas (10” by 12” , or bigger)
  • Acrylic Paint, assorted colors
  • Binders
  • Sheet protectors

Thank you all for the support and you may bring these school supplies to the DEI Lounge and we will deliver them to the Akwesasne Freedom School representatives on September 29th. Supporting the Akwesasne Freedom School and the young language learners helps counter the corrosive effects of the past Indian Residential Schools and other assimilation practices that tried to erase Indigenous languages and knowledge.
