Dr. Drew Story, Managing Director of the MIT Policy Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA will present the Fall 2023 Hopke Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, October 12 at 12:15
pm in Snell 213 on the Clarkson Collins Hill Campus.
The title of Dr. Story’s talk is “Leveraging Academic
Research and Expertise for Environmental Policy”. A
reception will immediately follow the lecture in the
Educational Resource Center room 2400.
In his role as the Managing Director of MIT’s Policy Lab,
Dr. Story guides MIT faculty through strategic policy
engagement to increase the impact of their work. As a
result, MIT researchers establish themselves as resources
and advisors to policymakers, and they develop insight
into improved research design for producing scholarship
with greater potential for societal impact.
Prior to joining MIT, Drew served as a policy advisor for
two US Senators on energy, environment, and scientific
research policy issues, including a year as an AAAS/ACS
Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow.
Following his tenure in Congress, Dr. Story was the
Global Change Science Lead at the US Global Change
Research Program and the staff lead for two chapters of
the Fifth National Climate Assessment.
“Dr. Story is an internationally recognized leader in the
connection of science and policy, and he has made a big impact himself on US policy”, said Andrea
Ferro, who is the Associate Director for Research for the Clarkson Institute for a Sustainable
Environment. “Dr. Story has led or supported over a dozen legislative provisions that were signed into
law as part of the Energy Act of 2020, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Inflation Reduction
Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and other legislative vehicles. We’re very excited to bring him to
campus to share his expertise and experience with the Clarkson community”.
The Hopke Lecture is supported by the Philip K. and Eleanor F. Hopke Endowment for the Institute for a
Sustainable Environment (ISE). Philip and Eleanor Hopke have been contributors to the Clarkson
community since 1989. The goal of the Hopke Lecture series is to continue the tradition of Dr. Hopke’s
career of making significant technical contributions to the fields of air quality, aerosol science, and
atmospheric chemistry, and also using scientific and technical knowledge to guide public policy decisions
at the highest levels of government. In honor of Professor Hopke’s work, the annual Hopke Lecture
features distinguished researchers who have made significant contributions to our understanding of the
environment and have used this scientific understanding to guide policy. The Hopke Lecture series
intends to stimulate interest in environmental research and motivate the participation of scientists in
public policy.

The lecture will take place in person Snell 213 on the Clarkson Collins Hill Campus. For remote access to
