We are aware that finding a parking space on campus can sometimes be challenging, and the University continues to look for ways to improve parking arrangements on campus. However, we want to remind you that parking in a fire lane on campus is still prohibited as it is against New York State law. The purpose of fire lanes is to ensure unobstructed access to our buildings and safety equipment in the event of an emergency. During an emergency event, it is essential that emergency vehicles are provided with this unobstructed access as any obstructions can delay or prevent adequate emergency operations from proceeding. The delay could cost someone’s life.
Clarkson University’s fire lane enforcement policy states that if your vehicle is found parked or unattended in a fire lane, the following steps will be taken:
- Campus Safety & Security will attempt to call the owner of the vehicle to notify them that their vehicle is parked in a fire lane and that it must be moved immediately. A ticket for $75 will also be issued for parking in a fire lane.
- If the vehicle is not moved within 10 minutes of the notification attempt, the vehicle will be towed and a vehicle boot will placed on the vehicle. The cost to have your vehicle towed or boot removed is $120 along with the $75 fine for parking in a fire lane.
The complete fire lane enforcement policy can be found on the Environmental Health & Safety ‘s website under ‘Fire Safety‘ along with a campus map indicating where fire lanes are located around campus. These references are also attached for your convenience. Please help us emphasize the importance of abiding by this policy to our visitors and contractors on campus.
