The Science Policy & Diplomacy Speakers Series at the University of Arizona, held each Fall, features presentations from world-renowned experts in science policy and diplomacy. This series offers an invaluable opportunity for scholars, scientists, policymakers, and students to delve into the critical intersection of science and diplomacy. We warmly invite you, your peers, and your students to join us for lectures by distinguished speakers, including university professors, industry entrepreneurs, and leading experts in science diplomacy. Each session includes a lecture followed by a moderated Q&A, conducted virtually via Zoom. Please note that registration is required.
The speaker on October 10, 2024, Dr. Susan E. Powers, is the Spence Professor of Sustainable Environmental Systems and the Director of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment at Clarkson University. Professor Powers integrates education and scholarly work through applied research on engineering, policy, and broader STEM education. She has secured several grants that combine campus sustainability projects with applied research, providing students with hands-on opportunities. Her work has focused on improving literacy in solid and food waste management, energy, and climate change, engaging audiences ranging from middle school students to state agencies. The overarching goal of these projects is to offer students real-world, complex challenges that enhance their technical education while fostering teamwork, social and policy perspectives, communication skills, and sustainability as a critical project criterion.
