Bike Security Precautions

Dear Campus Community,

The CU Campus Safety and Security team has received many reports this semester of stolen bikes. We are actively investigating and working with the Potsdam Village Police Department on these incidents; however, unfortunately we are currently working with limited information. At this time we are encouraging any community members who have bikes on campus to store them inside their rooms if it is safe to do so, especially after dark. If this is not feasible, please be sure to check your bike frequently and ensure that they are secured with a heavy-duty lock. Our reports indicate that many of the stolen bikes were secured with cable locks that were cut and removed.

On a related note, please remain vigilant for any suspicious activity or individuals on campus, particularly near residence halls and bike racks. Anyone carrying tools that may be used for removing locks who cannot be identified as a campus official should be reported to Campus Safety and Security immediately. The more quickly we can identify that a crime may be occurring, the more likely we are able to catch those responsible and locate and return the stolen property to its rightful owners.

Please reach out to Campus Safety and Security with any information or questions at 315-268-6666. We are available to answer calls 24/7, year-round.

Thank you,

CU Campus Safety and Security
