Sustainability Feature! Java Stop

Here at Clarkson, we think about sustainability in everything we do, including student-run start ups! Java Stop is a student run business on campus, located on the first floor of Snell Hall. Next time you want to grab a coffee or tea on campus, support Java Stop and all of their sustainability initiatives! Here’s just a few:

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals logo in the top left corner, with "12 Responsible Consumption and Production" and "3 Good Health and Well-Being" sustainability goal logos in the top right corner. A collage of images featuring a young woman (Carly LaBow, Head of Marketing for Java Stop) in an apron holding two glass coffee cups, silk plant based milk cartons, a paper cup reading "mental health matters" and a green bucket with a sticker reading "food waste." The Java Stop and Clarkson Institute for a Sustainable Environment logos are also featured. Text reads: "Offers plant-based milks, promotes mental health awareness and wellbeing, customers can use reusable cups and compostable cups" and "composts coffee grounds and espresso pucks."
  • Java Stop participates in our compost program, composting coffee grounds and espresso pucks. Their paper cups are compostable as well! Plastic cups are made from recycled materials.
  • Java Stop offers reusable cups – say no to single use and bring your own. They even have super stylish glass cups with glass straws!
  • Java Stop offers plant-based milk alternatives, which help lower your carbon footprint (compared to dairy milk).
  • Java Stop has worked with the CU Pantry to raise awareness about food insecurity on campus by selling coffee in cups with conversation-starting labels. They are also collaborating with Fill the Bucket, another student-run business that sells bucket hats made out of recycled materials, with a percentage of sales going to charity to support our community.
  • Java Stop works to spread awareness about mental health, and encourages positive vibes and wellbeing through labels on each cup.
  • The POS system used by Java Stop eliminates the need for receipts, reducing paper waste. Java Stop also limits paper advertisement and promotes on social media and the campus TVs.

A special thanks to Carly LaBow, Head of Marketing for Java Stop, for letting the ISE stop by, take pictures, and learn about sustainability initiatives!

The Institute for a Sustainable Environment is working to feature sustainability initiatives, like Java Stop’s efforts, taking place on campus. At Clarkson, we are committed to including sustainability in everything we do. If you have a project, story, or other sustainability work you’d like to share, please email Evelyn (laferrep@clarkson.edu).
