We are responding to a request from our New York Congressional representatives who are developing new legislation to support the nation’s “bioeconomy” — a broad term, but generally, the research, development, commercialization, and domestic manufacture of biotechnologies and products such as pharmaceuticals and associated supply chains. Below are the questions we are pulling together a response by Friday, December 6. If you would like to contribute or you have further questions, please email Kelly Chezum, kchezum@clarkson.edu. Thanks.
1. What existing federal programs should be considered as part of a Congressional bioeconomy agenda? Which government programs need more support, improved and modernized authorizations, and other support?
2. What new government programs should be considered by Congress?
3.What efforts, entities, and ideas based in New York State should we consider and understand? What support do these efforts and entities need, and how could Congress contribute?
4.What sectors and aspects of the bioeconomy need significant capital investment? How much?
5.Where is the US falling behind in terms of bioeconomy competitiveness compared to other nations? How can this best be remedied?
