Students are sought to work within a team on an externally funded project to measure and manage food waste in Potsdam and other Northern New York communities. The team includes Clarkson faculty, organic waste management professionals, and community stakeholders.
Interns will organize and carry out food waste audits for businesses and school districts and identify suitable solutions to divert food waste from their solid waste stream. This community-service type project will help municipalities and businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and potentially recover wasted food to support residents who are challenged by food insecurities.
Work requirements include time throughout the S25 semester (8-10 h/week, typical) to learn about these systems and audit protocols. Some audits will be completed during the semester, others will take place in May and June. Students who can work into the summer and have their own transportation will be given preference in hiring. This workload can be compensated with pay or a combination of pay and credit. (Note – additional work hours on related projects to extend the duration of summer employment are possible.)
