Local Environmental Lawmaking: How to Protect Raquette River Now!

Join Sustainability Club at 6:30pm on Tuesday, April 1st in the Student Center MPRs for a workshop on making local environmental laws.

Two people, Blake Lavia (left) and Tzintzun Aguilar-Izzo (right), stand outside on the banks of a river. They are wearing short sleeves and smiling.

Blake Lavia and Tzintzun Aguilar-Izzo from Talking Rivers will give an interactive workshop about local lawmaking in New York State, and the how Potsdam can adopt a local law to protect the rights of Raquette River. At a time with environmental regulations are being stripped away at the federal level, there is a need for local municipalities to step up and protect the rivers and the communities they sustain. Lavia and Aguilar-Izzo will share what steps town and village residents across New York State can take to pass municipal binding law. They will also break down and explain the specific components of the “Watershed Protection Law for Raquette River,” which is currently being considered by the Town of Potsdam. The duo from Talking Rivers will then lay out a clear call to action, and illustrate ways anyone can take concrete steps to protect riverine ecosystems for centuries to come.
