Book cover, Empire, Colonialism, and the Human Sciences

This bold and interdisciplinary collection reconsiders the role of the human sciences in imperial and colonial contexts across the Americas and Pacific. With contributions from historians and scholars in Indigenous and Latin American Studies, the volume foregrounds the ethical, relational, and epistemological dimensions of fieldwork, custodial institutions, and governance in colonial settings. Through rich case studies, the book challenges traditional narratives and emphasizes how research subjects exercised agency and resistance.

Casper joins co-editors Adam Warren (University of Washington) and Julia E. Rodriguez (University of New Hampshire) in offering a transformative vision for future scholarship on the human sciences. The volume is available in Open Access format through Cambridge University Press.
