Robert Thomas, an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Clarkson University, has been recognized as an Emerging Professional by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM International). The program has recognized 127 members of international industry and academia since 2015. The program’s mission is “Empowering Tomorrow’s Standards Leaders.”
The ASTM International Emerging Professionals program gives long-term benefits to new members who have demonstrated the potential to be leaders in industry and ASTM committees. Normally the program provides an expenses-paid trip to ASTM Committee Week and a day of in-person professional development and networking events. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the events will be held virtually this year. ASTM only selects up to six candidates per committee week, which are held four times a year.
Thomas has been at Clarkson since 2018. His research mission is to promote resilient and sustainable infrastructure for the 21st century through advancements in concrete materials technology. He is particularly interested in alternative cements, concrete durability, concrete repair, concrete sustainability, experimental mechanics, and high-strain-rate loading (impact and blast). He is a voting member of ASTM Committees C01 (Cement) and C09 (Concrete and Concrete Aggregates).
